And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men. (6,1-2). This mysterious plot from the Book of Genesis was developed in the Book of Watchers, which is the first part of the apocrypchal Book of Enoch. Two hundred angels, the Watchers, led by Shemhaza took the oath to possess human daughters. Angels united with women abd from their relationship giants were born. However, it appears that angels gave their women not only sons but also knowledge to which people were not prepared. This knowledge becomes the source of corruption and the children of angels spread destruction. From the Book of Giants which fragments were discovered among the  scrolls from Qumran we even know some of their names. We get to know about monsters born from animals and angels and about a bloody war against them. And when the voices of the souls of suffering people reach Heaven, giants are punished with nightmares foretelling their dectruction. They dream of water washing away almost all of their names from the tablet. What did it mean and whrere did it lead we get to know from the Book of Genesis. And what about the women who succumbed the angels? In the whole book the women do not say a word, they do not even have names. Though they are the main characters of this tragedy. Were they enslaved by the angels? Or quite the contrary, it was them who seduced the angels with their beauty? And what about the mother's love for their children even if they are 3 thousand cubits high and feed with human beings? Let us listen to the whole story again. This time told by Naama,  Shemhaza's wife. A content of the story is literary fiction based on the apocryphal books: The Book of Enoch and The Book of Giants. how beautiful are daughters of men you did not know?

you, who see His face

how they fire up senses with their dance you did not know?

you, to whom temptation of flesh are unknown

how they entice lovers with their shining eyes you did not know?

you, who busk in His light

that they tame sailors with their songs you did not know?

you, who sing the song of eternal glory

as cruel is your fascination as fragile is our beauty

as cruel is your love as willing are our hearts

as unwise is your wisdom as credulous is our trust

you did not know?

whom would I trust if not you, Shemihaza my heavenly husband

whom would I love if not you, Shemihaza my unearthly husband

to whom would I give my soul if not to you, Shemihaza

my angelic husband

then Shemihaza, the strongest of angels

spoke to two hundreds sons of heaven

let us choose wives from among human daughters each of us one

and we take an oath at the Hermon mountain

we choose the most beautiful from among human daughters

we will bind ourselves with a curse

let us choose wives and let us meet them

let us choose wives and let us meet them let us beget children with them

let us choose wives and let us meet them let us beget children with them

and when he spoke that, his voice reached the mountain

and the mountain echoed his words

let the sin fall upon the two hundred

let the sin fall upon the people

lat the sin fall upon animals

let it spread over the earth

even though the mountain echoed louder them Shemihaza spoke

this for was not heard by any of the Watchers

wind blew the mist away and sun lit the earth

whom going to fetch the water, I chose the longer way

I carried the pot of my father

on the way, down at the mountain I met an angel

he did not appear suddenly, as other angels

at the side of a path, as a bright rock he stood

as if he were angel of this path ever since

he glittered and shone with miraculous light

beyond all words and imagination

he stood proudly when I approached

his bright eyes looked at me passing

with question “where you go” he stopped me

“to get water from well” I answered

he came near and leaned over me

as flowers’ stalks on wind my legs bent and body trembled

then he said “ I am thirsty, will you give me water?”

closing my eyes to protect them from light I answered

“yes, my lord, I bring you water in my father’s pot”

and angel turned towards sun

which rose high on the eastern wind

answered “I will wait for you, my girl, thirsty”

and when I will have drunk I take you to your father’s house”

to your father’s house

I could have returned with another way it was shorter though

I could have chosen another way which I new much better

I could shatter the pot against a stone not keep my word

I could but I did not want

o mother

can you hear, Shemihaza my heavenly husband

it is our son’s voice

o my mother

can you hear, Shemihaza my unearthly husband

it is not a voice of a man it is not a voice of an angel

I am a giant

I am a son of angel

I am not mortal

strength of my arms

provoked a war

against people

against wild animals

against my brothers

earth is full of blood

it is not my earth

yours

o mother

where is my earth

can you hear, Shemihaza my angelic husband

I bore you sons unknown to the world

I gave birth to giants who destroy the earth

although the father’s heart is proud of their bravery

yet the mother’s ears all filled with cry

of souls of the people ravened by her hungry children

whom no one knows how to feed

can’t you hear, Shemihaza my angelic husband

for you I gave birth to those whom the world wants not

you taught us so many skills

how to be beautiful, how to paint eyes

how to embellish eyelashes

how to make bracelets and other ornaments

and polish stones

and adorn bodies

then how to color cloth

and dry them on the eastern wind

and how to call all parts of the world

we remember every spell

we can tell the fortune from stars

and we know ways of the moon

we see its eclipses

we know how to spell

we know how to despell

we know how to curse

how to forge swords

we know how to make shields

we know how to forge daggers

we know all sorceries by heart all curses

yes Shemihaza, yes Azazel

yes Barakiel, yes Armaros

your women possessed knowledge

and your children possessed knowledge

and people possessed your knowledge

which the blood-covered earth can not bear anymore

which poor mortals can not enjoy

which leads them to destruction since through it the world underwent change

since through it the world underwent change

now to you, dwellers of heaven

almighty angels

to you, who remained pure

the peoples’ souls complain

the peoples’ souls complain

at first timidly, in silent prayers

then in strengthened deadly cries

deadly cries

beseech to bring their complain

to the Highest one

the Highest one

to speak against the twelve

and their progeny

to speak for the humans

You, Lord know everything before your eyes nothing can be hidden

You are righteous so you will listen to voices of people

and severe will be the punishment which will fall upon the twelve

which will fall upon their children which will fall upon their wives

which will fall upon me

look into our souls

into brave heart of Shemihaza

into sorrowful eyes of the mother

into lost minds of our sons

should the guilt not fall upon Azazel

who disclosed secrets of heaven

and taught the people all the iniquity

was it not through his teaching

that our children turned away from the people

and acted against them

was it not through his teaching

You, Lord know everything

before it happens

yet you speak nothing

how ominous is your silence

O my Shemihiza, my loving husband

saint archangel revealed to me in a dream

that our sons, whose minds

will be disturbed by angels, will dye of sword

in fratricidal fight

please, stop me not; before it happens

your brother Azazel, with tight hands and legs will be dragged into the desert

covered with sharp stones

and eternal; darkness, since he was accused of the greatest of sins

say nothing to me, my unearthly husband

so that I confuse not the words of archangel

for you will be looking at death of children

and when father’s tears reach the earth you will be imprisoned with the others

under the highest hills

until the day of judgment

you keep silence, and ask not what my fate will be

I will become a mermaid, alluding and tempting

with her graces, into the perish,

young forever full of beauty, lonely for ages

unceasingly singing the most somber song

of heavenly husband

and giant children

dreams

monsters

flesh

their assassins

blood

earth

tablet in water

tablet in water

waters withdrew

my brother

will be destroyed

cry

great fear

strength

heaven

roots of tree

curse

suffering

great water

great water

from eternal darkness

deliver us

from fiery flames

deliver us

from endless waters

deliver us

from great desert

deliver us

from empty abyss

deliver us

from cursed valley

deliver us

of tempting to sin

purify us

of our unrighteousness

purify us

of our wives’ unrighteousness

purify us

of our sons’ unrighteousness

purify us

of their victims’’ blood

purify us

of tears’ abundance

purify us

of sin against people

purify us

of sin against birds

purify us

of sin against animals

purify us

of sin against reptiles and fish

purify us

of sin against heaven

purify us

from justice

save us

from mortality

save us

from voice of cherubim

save us

from solitude

save us

do not punish us

with thunder and tremble

do not punish us

with horrible verdict

do not punish us

with eternal condemn

do not punish us

with our sons’ death

do not punish us

with our wives’ tears

do not punish us

do not punish us

with abyss of darkness

do not punish us

from your anger

save us

do not punish us

of our sin

purify us

from voice of earth

deliver us

from your punishment

save us

with eternal expulsion

do not punish us

of our weakness

purify us

from our evil

deliver us

how great is your anger

how great is our sin

how great is your punishment

how great is our weakness

who knoweth our weaknesses

who knoweth all before it happens

have mercy upon us

Enoch, who walketh with God

Enoch, brother who has hidden

I dreamt of you, Enoch, when I fell asleep in burnt garden of my father

you paced through heaven and a voice called

“come to the holy word”

“come to the holy word”

and this voice rose you to heaven’s gate

then my eyes looked through your eyes

and I saw creatures as fiery flames

which could turn into human shape

and I saw places of storm and lightning

then places of thunders and light of lights

and I saw sources of all waters

and all rivers till the great darkness

then you Enoch, went to place of nothingness

with your eyes I saw a horrible thing

there was no high heaven nor solid earth

yet there was prepared a deserted and awesome place

and seven bound stars burned as morning light

then I saw a great fire spitting flames

and abyss full of fiery columns falling into it

then the words were heared:

“this place is a prison for angels, they will be kept here for ages”

“there will be flood on earth and everything will be demolished

earth will be purified from every corruption

earth will be purified from every sin

from every wrath from every trouble

from every unrighteousness from every destruction

from every fear from every suffering

and I will never send flood for all generations and ages”

and then there was darkness and silence

my angelic husband

[2] Oath of Shemihaza

[200 take oath to possess humans' daughters (Book of Enoch)
]

(Naama)
then Shemihaza, the strongest of angels
spoke to two hundreds sons of heaven

"let us choose wives from among human daughters
each of us one, and we take an oath at the Hermon mountain
we choose the most beautiful from among human daughters
we will bind ourselves with a curse
let us choose wives and let us meet them
let us beget children with them"

and when he spoke that, his voice reached the mountain
and the mountain echoed his words
let the sin fall upon the two hundred
let the sin fall upon the people
lat the sin fall upon animals
let it spread over the earth
even though the mountain echoed louder them Shemihaza spoke
this for was not heard by any of the Watchers

[3] Forbidden love

[Angels' match with women (Book of Enoch)]

(Naama)
wind blew the mist away and sun lit the earth
whom going to fetch the water, I chose the longer way
I carried the pot of my father
on the way, down at the mountain I met an angel
he did not appear suddenly, as other angels
at the side of a path, as a bright rock he stood
as if he were angel of this path ever since
he glittered and shone with miraculous light
beyond all words and imagination
he stood proudly when I approached
his bright eyes looked at me passing
with question "where you go" he stopped me
"to get water from well" I answered
he came near and leaned over me
as flowers? stalks on wind my legs bent and body trembled
then he said "I am thirsty, will you give me water?"
closing my eyes to protect them from light I answered
"yes, my lord, I bring you water in my father?s pot"
and angel turned towards sun
which rose high on the eastern wind
answered "I will wait for you, my girl, thirsty
and when I will have drunk I take you to your father?s house"

I could have returned with another way
it was shorter though
I could have chosen another way
which I new much better
I could shatter the pot against a stone
not keep my word
I could but...
I did not want

[4] Children of Angels

[Giants and monsters spread the destruction (Book of Enoch, Book of Giants). Dialogue of giant Ohya and his mother Naama.]

(Ohya)
i madir sheli

(Naama)
can you hear, Shemihaza my unearthly husband
it is not a voice of a man
it is not a voice of an angel

(Ohya)
eo giganah

kata heyune vahshi
kata bradir shalan

(Naama)
can you hear, Shemihaza
my angelic husband
I bore you sons
Unknown to the world
I gave birth to giants
who destroy the earth
although the father's heart
is proud of their bravery
yet the mother's ears
all filled with cry
of souls of the people
ravened by her hungry children
whom no one knows
how to feed
can't you hear, Shemihaza
my angelic husband
for you I gave birth to those
whom the world wants not
o mother

(Ohya: o my mother | I am a giant | I am a son of angel | I am not mortal | strength of my arms | provoked a war | against people | against wild animals | against my brothers | earth is full of blood | it is not my earth | yours | o mother | where is my earth)

(Choir of the Watchers)

[5] Swelled river of knowledge

[Knowledge passed by Azazel (and others) to women and children (Book of Enoch) changes the world.]

(Naama)
you taught us so many skills
how to be beautiful, how to paint eyes
how to embellish eyelashes
how to make bracelets and other ornaments
and polish stones
and adorn bodies
then how to color cloth
and dry them on the eastern wind
and how to call all parts of the world

we remember every spell
we can tell the fortune from stars
and we know ways of the moon
we see its eclipses
we know how to spell
we know how to despell
we know how to curse
how to forge swords
we know how to make shields
we know how to forge daggers
we know all sorceries by heart
all curses

yes Shemihaza, yes Azazel
yes Barakiel, yes Armaros
your women possessed knowledge
and your children possessed knowledge
and people possessed your knowledge
which the blood-covered earth
can not bear anymore
which poor mortals
can not enjoy
which leads them to destruction
since through it the world underwent change

[6] Cry of Earth

[Plaints of earth the heavens hear  (Book of Enoch)]

(Naama)
now to you, almighty angels,
dwellers of heaven;
to you, who remained pure
the peoples? souls complain
at first timidly, in silent prayers
then in strengthened deadly cries
beseech to bring their complain
to the Highest one
to speak against the twelve
and their progeny
to speak for the humans

You, Lord know everything
before your eyes nothing can be hidden
You are righteous
so you will listen to voices of people
and severe will be the punishment
which will fall upon the twelve
which will fall upon their children
which will fall upon their wives...
which will fall upon me

look into our souls
into brave heart of Shemihaza
into sorrowful eyes of the mother
into lost minds of our sons
should the guilt not fall upon Azazel
who disclosed secrets of heaven
and taught the people all the iniquity
was it not through his teaching
that our children turned away from the people
and acted against them

You, Lord know everything
before it happens
yet you speak nothing
how ominous is your silence

Jarek Kordaczuk (Book of Enoch)

[7] Verdict of Heaven

[Plan of doom of giants, people and fallen angels, announcement of the flood (Book of Enoch)]

(Naama)
o my Shemihiza, my loving husband
saint archangel revealed to me in a dream
that our sons, whose minds
will be disturbed by angels, will dye of sword
in fratricidal fight

please, stop me not; before it happens,
your brother Azazel, with tight hands and legs
will be dragged into the desert,
covered with sharp stones
and eternal; darkness, since he was accused of
the greatest of sins

say nothing to me, my unearthly husband
so that I confuse not the words of archangel
for you will be looking at death of children
and when father?s tears reach the earth
you will be imprisoned with the others
under the highest hills
until the day of judgment

you keep silence, and ask not what my fate will be
I will become a mermaid, alluding and tempting
with her graces, into the perish,
young forever full of beauty, lonely for ages
unceasingly singing the most somber song
of heavenly husband
and giant children

[9] Pleas of the Watchers

[Pleas of fallen angels for saving addressed to God (through Enoch). God rejects them, yet leaves hope (Book of Enoch, Book of Giants). Litany of the Watchers.]

(choir of the Watchers)
[:deliver us:]
from eternal darkness
from fiery flames
from endless waters
from great desert
from empty abyss
from cursed valley

[:purify us:]
of tempting to sin
of our unrighteousness
of our wives? unrighteousness
of our sons? unrighteousness
of their victims?? blood
of tears? abundance
of sin against people
of sin against birds
of sin against animals
of sin against reptiles and fish
of sin against heaven
of sin against earth

[:save us:]
from justice
from mortality
from voice of cherubim
from solitude
from angels? revenge
from humans? ghosts

[:do not punish us:]
with eternal torture
with thunder and tremble
with horrible verdict
with eternal condemn
with our sons? death
with our wives? tears
with fiery abyss
with abyss of darkness

from your anger [save us]
justice [do not punish us]
of our sin [purify us]
from voice of earth [deliver us]

from your punishment [save us]
with eternal expulsion [do not punish us]
of our weakness [purify us]
from our evil [deliver us]

(Naama)
how great is your anger
how great is our sin
how great is your punishment
how great is our weakness
who knoweth our weaknesses
who knoweth all before it happens
have mercy upon us

Jarek Kordaczuk (Book of Enoch)

[10] Voice of God

[Apocalyptic vision of angels' prison and fate of earth (Book of Enoch)]

Enoch, who walketh with God
Enoch, brother who has hidden
I dreamt of you, Enoch, when I fell asleep
in burnt garden of my father
you paced through heaven and a voice called
"come to the holy word"
and this voice rose you to heaven's gate
then my eyes looked through your eyes

and I saw creatures as fiery flames
which could turn into human shape
and I saw places of storm and lightning
then places of thunders and light of lights
and I saw sources of all waters
and all rivers till the great darkness

then you Enoch, went to place of nothingness
with your eyes I saw a horrible thing
there was no high heaven nor solid earth
yet there was prepared a deserted and awesome place
and seven bound stars burned as morning light
then I saw a great fire spitting flames
and abyss full of fiery columns falling into it
then the words were heared:

"this place is a prison for angels, they will be kept here for ages"

"there will be flood on earth
and everything will be demolished.
earth will be purified
from every corruption
earth will be purified
from every sin
from every wrath
from every trouble
from every unrighteousness
from every destruction
from every fear
from every suffering
and I will never send flood
for all generations and ages"

and then there was darkness and silence.

[11] God hath delivered us

[fragment of Psalm 124 "God hath delivered us"]

(Child, a cappella voice, in a manner of a children-riddle)
Blessed be the Lord
who hath not given us
as a prey to their teeth
Our soul is escaped as a bird
out of the snare of the fowlers
the snare is broken
and we are escaped
blessed be the Lord
who made heaven and earth.
