We know neither the date of her birth nor death. According to the imprecise information it is said that she lived at the turn of the seventh and sixth century BC.  We do not have certainty as  to the place  where she was born because the former authors wrote of Eresos or Mitylene; fortunately both  cities lied on Lesbos so at least we have the justification for  the title of this text. The place of her death is highly embarrasing since Menander (in Strabo), Hesychios, Palajfatos, Plutarch, Ovid, Statius and Suidas  say ? either directly or allusively ? about a suicide jump from Lefkada (?White Rock?) in Sicily . However two anonymous poems from VII volume of Palatine Anthology mentioned about her grave on Lesbos, where  she had rested mourned by her former wards. We know her mother's name Kleis (later the name of Sappho's daughter), and the father was mentioned as Skamandronymosa Eunominosa Eumenos, Kamon, Samos and Simon, although she was raised at her stepfather's house- Ekrytos, Eurygios or Etarchos. Not much is known about her apperance. Damocharis claimed that she was beautiful  Plato held the same opinion as far as he thought about her, not her soul. The scholiast Lukiana wrote clearly: "poorly endowed by nature, small and dark"; the same way she was presented by Ovid. Famous Alcaeus of Mytilene, who not only knew her but even  felt a strong but not requited  affection for her, characterized her in one of his poems as "pure and innocent". On the contrary Amejpsias, Amfis, Antifanes, Difilos, Efippos and Timokles portrayed her as  indecent seducer of her own wards, and for Tatian, the christian heretic, who recognized everything what greek villainy, she was an indecent erotomaniac. It is well known that our lesbian directed education (especially musical and poetic) of girls gathered in a kind of religious association (θίασος) worshipping  Aphrodite, but we do not know why? if she demorelized girls? the aristocracy not ony local  but also those from  Miletus, Colophon and Salamis, willingly gave their daughters under her care. Her husband, Kerkylas  from Andros, is such a shady figure that some even doubt his existence  and her suicide  because of unrequited love to a beautiful Phaon (who was in fact a local deity) is somehow difficult to reconcile with her supposedly avowed homosexuality. Supposedly, because the ancient knew the tradition  of so many Lesbian's relationship with men, that  finally her defenders brought another Sappho of Erosos into the literary existence, a courtesan and a poet contemporary to our heroine (mentioned in Aspasia, Elian and in XV century in Michael Apostolius) and made her responsible for all sexual excesses of  that. And what do we know about the Lesbian for sure? Well, even the great ancients Solon, Pindar, Bacchylides, Theocritus, Theophrastus, Apollonios of Rhodos, Posidippus, Callimachus ,Catullus, Ovid and Horace admired her poetic genius. Plato called her the Tenth Muse, for Strabo  she was a 'miraculous phenomena', and Galen called her a Poet (poet par excellence) just like Homer. All of them were more fortunete than we because they knew all of her work.  And she wrote a lot: Alexandrian philologists had gathered her works in nine volumes, of which we have only remains today as zealous Christians burnt all of her poems in the fourth century. In the medieval times, the latin-speaking West  prefered to remain silent about her, and the greek-speaking, god-fearing Byzantium despised her. <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:595.3pt 841.9pt; margin:70.85pt 70.85pt 70.85pt 70.85pt; mso-header-margin:35.4pt; mso-footer-margin:35.4pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> The authors of the musical project "Sappho" are certainly aware of all of this.  They even probably know that not so long ago there were attempts to compare our Wanda's suicidal jump to Vistula River, well known from The Chronicleof Poland by Wincenty KadÅ‚ubek and Sappho's desperate jump from Lefkada. However, leaving all aside they they decided to find the hidden sound of Sappho's thrilling poetry in the modern musical form. believe me

believe me I'd like to die
despairing crying words full of sorrow
voice of dread gods
called you to the other side
don't forget me

but if you were to forget
I'll remind you myself
how many beautiful days we went through

how you enjoyed adorning your hair with
flowers that smells freshly
and chaplets of violets and roses

or on soft pillows
on a neat, tender bedding you lied
to quench girls' desire

with you my sweet beauty
is playing golden Aphrodite
girl with a sweet voice
more sonorous than lyre
more golden than gold
whiter than milk
softer than water
more melodious than lyra
more haughty than horse
more florid than rose
hotter than fire
brighter than sun
more delicate than air
more fragrant than oils

you look so beautiful in this transparent blouse
you look so beautiful in these silky robes
in which Charon admires you

Will you love any of Gods more
out of them only Charon
won't let the hope rise
when you are covered with black soil
don't forget me
