Works of various composers. Compilation. Compositions, studies and arrangements. I come from the mountains, and what I love most about them is observing sources. Water pours down the stones from different sides, streams sometimes hide and reappear in unusual spots. On sunny days they are almost gone, but after the rain they are born again and fl ow with even more strength. By recording this music I wanted to sing out my own sources. Sometimes the source is the melody, the lyrics, sometimes it is a memory, a word spoken by another person who I had just gotten to know, or events that had to have happened ? even if I don?t understand why. All of this blends together unnoticeably, creating consciousness, commonness and the moment in which I stand. These various sources of mine were joined together by musicians and friends: Jarek Kordarczuk, Marcin Wawruk and Roger Treece. Jarek provoked me to sing tones which once I believed were beyond my reach. I have been sharing my private and professional life with Marcin for years. Roger ? the perfect companion for long talks on life and music ? convinced me to follow my dreams... I have been working on this album for a few years in between other projects and daily life events. Its contrasting nature and diverse content is intentional ? my artistic sources were just as diverse. Each track relates to a personal experience. The motto of the whole album is the song ?Ja nie chcę spać? (?I Don?t Want to Sleep?), which tells the story of people which are similar to me ? who are already a bit experienced, but with a head full of ideas and who are open to new challenges. This song also expresses my unabated captivation with the climate of fi lms from the 1960s and the music by Krzysztof Komeda. I asked the American composer Roger Treece to arrange this song for me. I was interested in how he perceives the music of a Polish composer who was fascinated with jazz. The reference point for the whole project was the noble, analog sound of old recordings (part of the songs I recorded on an old valve microphone). There are more references to evanescence, e.g. a musical impression on the song ?Mała błękitna chusteczka? (?Little Blue Handkerchief?), the fi rst melody I remember from my childhood or the diptych ?Stary gambista? (?The Old Gambist?). The old gambist is a real person who I met 20 years ago. An elderly man in a loose sweater who played Early Music with the passion of a rocker and the energy of a young boy. ?Stara kobieta słucha? (?The Old Lady is Listening?) is an homage to the late Danuta Szafl arska, the unforgettable Polish actress. A few of the tracks are my earlier musical pieces and lyrics which over the years have gained new meaning ? ?Kołysanka? (?The Lullaby?) originally comes from a series of children?s songs, but in fact tells a story about our ephemerality, our fears and how fragile we are when confronted with the surrounding world. ?Tryptyk kurpiowski? (?The Kurpie Triptych?): once I was performing traditional songs from the Kurpie region as arranged by Karol Szymanowski. However, already at that time I felt that the discipline of form necessary for interpreting classical pieces in fact limited my still shy inclinations towards improvisation and transformation. ?Oczy me miłe? (?My Beloved Eyes?) is a musical impression based on the motifs from a beautiful Renaissance love song (as Sting says madrigals seem to be the fi rst pop songs). I divided the recorded material to two stylistically different parts, as if it were two sides of one vinyl record in a way. The fi rst one, arranged by Marcin Wawruk and Roger Treece, is lighter. The second, created together with the composer Jarek Kordaczuk, is more avantgarde. The bridge which brings these two worlds together is the track ?Źródła? (?Sources?), which I sang with artists who work in a variety of musical fi elds: the jazz vocalist Agnieszka Hekiert; the singer-songwriter Basia Raduszkiewicz; the choirmaster Marcin Wawruk; and the Brazilian percussionist Celio de Carvalho. I also invited artists who I greatly admire for their virtuosity and their passion for music to work on this project: Sebastian Wypych, the double-bass enchanter; Cezary Konrad, the poet of jazz drums; pianist Jacek Skowroński, who was an ever-vigilant accompanist gifted with an amazing harmonic imagination; the brilliant string quartet New Art Ensemble; and my friends from the ProForma vocal ensemble. It is a platform for a bold meetingof various motifs coming from seemingly disparate sources: the Polish folk traditionand the singer-songwriter genre, Early Music and contemporary avant-garde, jazz and popular songs; all this filtered through the artistic personalities of the composers (Marcin Wawruk, Roger Treece, Jarek Kordaczuk) and performers. As a result, songs have been created that combine the sound of human voice, acoustic instruments and sophisticated electronics in a variety of stylistic configurations in an original way.
